Fotosynthesis in 2 steps: from the anorganic elements H2O and CO2 (water and carbondioxide) the chloroplasts in a plant build organic matter via the energy of the sun. In the first step ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and NADPH2 are created; in a second step this ATP is used to free energy (->ADP+P+energy) to create glucose (C6H12O6) en oxygen (6O2). It’s a balance of anabolic and catabolic reactions – the (anorganic) fluids go up (water, minerals) and the organic matter (glucose, starch) goes down to the roots of the plant where it is used for its growth or stored as future nutrients.

Cellular respiration is the set of the metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products. The reactions involved in respiration are catabolic reactions that involve the redox reaction (oxidation of one molecule and the reduction of another). Respiration is one of the key ways a cell gains useful energy to fuel cellular changes. The cellular respiration process takes place in the mitochondria.

Diffusion is a non-energy consuming proces between 2 substances. In the picture above, 300 gr sugar is diluted in 750 ml vodka. The proces takes place in a bottle containing an orange with 40 incisions (in which 40 coffeebeans are stuck). Leave the set-up for 40 days (christian) or for 21 days (pagan). anne tyng, architect

The discovery of today: the 90-year old Anne Tyng, architect, collaborator of Buckminster Fuller and Louis Kahn. Anne Tyng’s work is to inhabit geometry. Since the 1950s, when she worked closely with Louis I. Kahn and independently pioneered habitable space-frame architecture, Tyng has applied natural and numeric systems to built forms on all scales, from urban plans to domestic spaces. A tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron, and dodecahedron, each is built to human scale and can be entered, explored, comprehended. For optimum effect, look through these open structures at the massive spiral that lifts from the wall and rotates towards the ceiling. This is how Tyng sees the world and derives her own built forms, through the symmetries, orders, and dynamic progressions by which one form in geometry becomes another.

OpenGreens presentation at Upgrade! Zagreb

Sunday may 22nd at 1pm/3pm, Annemie Maes will give a presentation of Okno’s OpenGreens project at Upgrade! Zagreb, AKC Medika, Hacklab 01 – Pierottijeva 11, Zagreb.

If we really want to reshape our urban way of life on a sustainable and ecological basis, we will have to take tangible measures. But how and where can we create green oases in the concrete jungles of our towns? On the window ledge, the balcony or the rooftop?
The multimedia artist and activist Annemie Maes will give us some answers and practical tips. She has long been involved in eco-technologies and grass-roots activism. In 2004, she and Guy van Belle set up OKNO, an artists collective that aims to develop innovative cultural projects linking art and technology.
For example: Connected Open Greens – the outskirts of town where culture and nature can come together symbiotically, where regenerative energy technologies meet traditional gardening and where art projects might make new biotopes. The question is this: to what extent can new organisms, new surroundings and new landscapes be generated by merging the artificial with the natural?
OKNO members operate two Open Green Rooftop Gardens in Brussels. They observe and record the growth, flowering and decay of plants as well as providing a habitat for insects and keeping bee colonies.
In Zagreb, Annemie Maes will be talking about the Connected Open Greens project, one feature of which is urban bee-keeping.

Enhanced Beehives – Electronic Creatures*

An experimental and playful hands-on workshop (BEAM related) by Ralf Schreiber.

…it is a lot of fun to build your own robotic creature. As soon as the circuit starts working the robots begin to sing and jerk – there is always a great Hello.
It’s a magic moment and the constructor’s pride is often mixed with a little fear, that continuing soldering could possibly damage the just created little robot.
Time and again it is amazing to see, that such a wimpy, handcrafted creature can arouse empathy, can even activate a certain care in the builder…. (rs)

The most simple way to create and build “life like” machines or robots is by the use of analogue oscillator circuits. Oscillations can be feed-backed and thus simple interactions will happen and simple neuronal networks behavior can be simulated.
In this workshop we will build different kinds of machines. In combination with tiny motors and loudspeakers (piezos) they will generate smallest movements and soft sounds. All these machines are based on extreme low energetic circuits designs and get powered by the electric energy from tiny solar-panels or wimpy diy batteries.
All the finished machines can be exposed / set free in the garden. Furthermore some “creatures” can be connected or integrated to botanical or fungal organism (the plants resistance/capacity will get an integral part of the oscillating circuits).
For the design and look we will recycle & reuse wimpy stuff and elements direct from the garden: leaves, thin twigs, wax from the bee hives…

Schreiber is building solar-powered electronic insects that sing, chirp, swing and crawl. These little creatures get their energy from the sun and will probably outlive most of the fine electronic devices surrounding us today.
During the past few years Ralf has given numerous workshops around the world, teaching people to build their own robots from cheap components.
This knowledge does not only give people the possibility to build funny little toys, it also gives people more control and understanding of their increasingly technological surroundings.

Adhérant au concept communautaire mis en place par le projet international « Window Farms », un véritable jardin, recyclé, suspendu et vivant…
Nous créerons ensemble des jardins suspendus. Ce projet DIY, faisant partie du projet en réseau Window Farms, consiste en un jardin hydroponique, très esthétique, et élaboré à partir de matériaux récupérés. L’artiste Kyd Campbell (CA/DE), rejointe par les artistes/écologistes Annemie Maes (BE) et ingenieur Jérôme Lauer (FR/DE), vont collaborer pour construire un jardin suspendu au village de Saint-Nazaire-le-Désert, et offrir plusieurs présentations d’approches créatives et écologiques et vous assisteront pour créer votre propre jardin suspendu.

Following the bee monitoring workshop, we have an Okno OpenGreens working day:we start to clean out the garden, compost last years’ herbs and make a design for the coming season, bring in the monitored hives and introduce new garden projects, e.g. ‘butterfly project’.

Good Afternoon!
We are in 2025. We know by now that there has been a one week settlement here, at the Quay des Péniches 2, 14 years ago.
After 7 days, everybody was gone. We know by now that on the 6th day, on saturday 22 of january 2011, a big crisis appeared which caused a moment of panic and despair. Short after, people were recognizing that the alarm were false. There was a party whole night long.
We don’t know what happened the next morning and early afternoon. We only know that everybody and everything was gone by sunday 23 january 16:00 in the afternoon.
We invite you to now have a look together with us on what was going on.

burning ice – it’s the economy, stupid!

This fourth edition of Burning Ice will be built up around the theme of economy. Climate change confronts us with the consequences of our actions. It turns our world-view with its endless growth completely upside down. Our civilisation appears to be underpinned by waste, excess and fundamental inequality. The capitalist theory of progress believes in economic growth as the best measure of human well-being, in a market price in which all costs are contained and in money as the perfect indicator of value. We can understand the current crises as an inevitable result of the blind faith in this holy trinity: growth, price, money.
In Burning Ice #4 we will hear economists, philosophers and artists who criticise this blind faith, introduce new values and principles to economic reasoning, link growth and environmental impact, andtalk about the illusion of the correct market price and a repositioning of money.
Burning Ice #4 positions itself between the theoretical, practical and poetic views of economics. Thistri-pod is given concrete form by the three locations: the KBC auditorium, the Changing Tents and the Kaaitheater.

Six ‘hexayurts’ together form a temporary zone for social and economic change. At the invitation of Radical Hope, ten artists have spent two months preparing this ‘colony’. Artists, scientists and other visitors are invited first and foremost to come and help build the zone on Monday 17th January. Following this, and for one week, the hexayurts will be the setting for the study and practice of concrete change, a place where people themselves can take action and put forward ideas: ideas concerning other forms of organising work, urban food production, alternative energy management, innovative funding, new forms of knowledge production and so on.
Changing Tents is a social ritual which everyone, including visitors, can experience by makingsuggestions during the course of the week. From the beginning of January you can programme your own activities as part of Changing Tents by adding them to the Changing Agenda.

Numerous artistic and cultural actors in the Mediterranean area, in Europe, and throughout the world have noticed the important changes in our societies and the difficulties resulting from these changes. As experimenters and explorers, they are putting their efforts into proposing new ways of operating in the cultural sector and beyond.
In this moment of multiple and confusing crises, the European Union is also searching for new perspectives through its EU 2020 strategy. Within this context, it seems important to highlight how cultural actors are coping with social transformations, with transformations of public policies, or with transformations of cultural and artistic practices (new collaborative practices, the integration of communication technologies, etc.).
During the Ready to Change Forum, we are hazarding the following questions: is it possible to combine our knowledge, our experiences, and our desires in order to take a collective position? Is it possible to demonstrate the determinant role that we are assuming in this moment of our history, one which is illuminating the meanings and reconstructing models of solidarity, and proposing new ways of thinking and new forms of organization and relationships?
